BEHIND THE TEXTILES

Vitale Barberis Canonico

Region: Biella, Italy EST 1663

Founded in 1663 and still family-run, this legendary Italian mill has over 360 years of experience woven into every metre of cloth.

Thirteen generations. One region. An unbroken legacy of excellence from Biella, Italy — the heartland of fine European wool.

When we set out to craft our winter collection, we weren’t just looking for a textile. We were looking for a partner whose philosophies mirrored our own. A deep respect for craftsmanship. A relentless pursuit of quality and a belief that true progress starts with knowing your foundations. That’s what led us to Vitale Barberis Canonico.

Vitale Barberis Canonico is steeped in history — but it’s their constant evolution that makes them timeless.Their fabrics have graced the ateliers of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses, but they aren’t looking backward. They are heritage in motion. Through cutting-edge technology, world-leading sustainability practices, and a refusal to compromise, they’re redefining what tradition looks like today.

World Leading Wool
Vitale Barberis Canonico's wool is celebrated for its exceptional softness, durability, and refined drape, crafted from premium Australian Merino fibers
Biella, Italy
Biella’s pristine Alpine water, ideal humidity, and historic mills create the perfect conditions for producing exceptionally fine and consistent textiles.

Take their Perennial fabric. Super 110s wool. Lightweight. Resilient. Fluid in movement and sharp in form. It’s a refined reworking of one of the original fabrics they first produced centuries ago — built for everyday wear but executed with the precision of a masterwork. In short, it’s everything a modern suit should be: classic, comfortable, and impossibly smart. It’s this blend of innovation and timelessness that makes it the natural choice for a new era of tailoring. This is why we partner with them.

Vitale Barberis Canonico is renowned for producing premium fabrics through a meticulous seven-step process that ensures exceptional quality and performance.

  • Selection of Raw Materials: VBC sources high-quality Merino wool, including Super 180’s wool of 14.5 microns, from responsible farms that prioritise animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

  • Shearing and Sorting: Skilled shearers carefully harvest the wool, which is then sorted to select only the finest fibers, ensuring uniformity and excellence in the final product.

  • Scouring and Combing: The raw wool undergoes thorough cleaning to remove impurities, followed by combing to align fibers parallelly, resulting in a smooth and consistent texture.

  • Spinning: Advanced spinning techniques transform the prepared fibers into fine yarns, balancing strength and softness to enhance the fabric's durability and comfort.

  • Dyeing: Utilising both traditional and innovative dyeing methods, VBC achieves vibrant and lasting colors, contributing to the fabric's aesthetic appeal.

  • Weaving: Expert weavers employ precise techniques to interlace the yarns, creating fabrics with distinct patterns and textures that reflect VBC's commitment to craftsmanship.

  • Finishing: The final stage involves specialised treatments to enhance the fabric's hand feel, drape, and performance characteristics, such as wrinkle resistance and breathability.

This comprehensive process, rooted in centuries of expertise and a commitment to sustainability, positions Vitale Barberis Canonico's fabrics among the finest in the world.

Woven From History

Vitale Barberis Canonico’s archive, housing over 2,000 volumes of fabric samples dating back to 1860, is a living library of global textile history—demonstrating that true innovation is rooted in deep knowledge, where each new fabric draws from a legacy of design, technique, and timeless inspiration.

At Peter Jackson, we’ve spent 75 years refining the art of Australian tailoring. We’re still proudly family-owned. We still obsess over every cut, every stitch, every finish. And just like VBC, we believe that legacy only matters when it’s used to make something better.

Sustainability is part of that story.  Vitale Barberis Canonico leads the way in responsible wool production — from renewable energy to advanced water recycling at their Biella mill. It’s a quiet kind of innovation. One that puts the planet first, while raising the bar for what modern luxury can look like. Their approach speaks not only to environmental responsibility, but to a deeper understanding of longevity — creating fabrics designed to endure in both form and relevance.

Quality is paramount for us. We own several farms in Australia which means we have total control from raw material to the finished product.

- Vitale Barberis Canonico's Creative Director

Our collaboration is the meeting point of two philosophies — one Italian, one Australian. Both defined by heritage. Both driven by progress. Both committed to the idea that tailoring should never be rushed, compromised, or anything less than exceptional.

The result? A suit that doesn’t just look refined — it feels considered. Woven from centuries of knowledge. Designed for life now.

Because in a world chasing the next trend, we believe in dressing with intention. And that real style — like real craft — always moves forward.

This is heritage, tailored for what’s next.
